17 Years!

Ron and I celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary yesterday (June 13th)! It was a pretty normal Saturday filled with the usual errands, cleaning and shopping, excluding ball games though which is way off the norm. Ron had to perform a wedding for a couple. The groom's parents are in our ward. (That's the second wedding he's done since being Bishop.) He was trying to come up with some "great" advice to share with the newly weds. Since it fell on our anniversary it caused us to try and remember some of the counsel we were given. Raymond Malouf was the sealer who married us. The only advice I could remember he gave me was, "To not pick up the hoe when Ron's outside working. Just tell him he's doing a great job and bring him a cold glass of lemonade." I'm not sure the wisdom behind this admonishment. Quite ironically, we felt like our marriage is better because we practice the antithesis and share the work around home and there really isn't a division of "men's work" and "women's work." I frequently mow the lawn, plant and hoe the garden. Likewise, Ron folds laundry when it's sitting there waiting , changes dirty diapers, and does the dishes if there are some to be done. I think for us it's worked really great!

We were able to catch a movie in the evening and opted to see Star Trek. Both of us really liked it. Our first years of marriage, we enjoyed watching Star Trek: The Next Generation. I never really got into the old Star Trek, but that's what this movie is based on. So as not to ruin the story for any who are wishing to see it, I won't comment any more.

While we were away, the kids were busy preparing for a surprise welcome home. Jamie made a delicious 2-layer white cake iced with cool whip, and a thin layer of strawberry jam spread on the very top. Everyone helped with a very cute poster the said, "Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!...17th." It was way fun as we came through the door and our children yelled, "Happy Anniversary" and then proceeded to show us the neat little things they had done for us. They were super excited and so were we!

Inspired!

The Bartlett Family Blog that Tami organized inspired me to start my family's blog. I'm a novice and Jamie actually set up our blog and is showing me how to post and do whatever else there is to maintain a blog.

I'd like to use this blog mainly as a journal entry for my extended family to read to find out what my family is doing. My goal is to update it on Sundays. This way, rather than email, you find out about us only if you want to because you checked out our blog.

So here it goes!

Erin finished Kindergarten (WOW!) on Thursday this week and will start 1st grade in the Fall. Her teacher will be Mrs. Ermer. She has one more soccer game on Saturday. Erin really proved to be a great player this Spring and scored lots of goals.

Jamie, Becca and Owen all finish school this Thursday. Jamie and Becca spent most of last week on field trips. Jamie earned the privilege with good grades and citizenship to attend the Honors Science Field Trip to Timpanogas Cave on Wednesday, and Lagoon on Thursday. Becca likewise earned the privilege to go to Hogle Zoo on Tuesday. To finish off the school week, they both participated in the Mt. Man Biathlon with their classmates at the Logan Aquatic Center. They ran 1.5 miles, then swam 300 meters. Becca finished 3rd among the 7th grade girls. Jamie finished 20th among 90 entrants of 8th grade girls. I am very proud of them both. Of course their school day didn't end with the competition, but continued by spending until 2:30 at the pool. They came home sunburned and very tired.

Jamie learned today of a volleyball camp being offered at Logan High in June. Right now her plan is to try out for the team in August. I think she could be really good. If that doesn't work out, she might try the swim team. Jamie has a lot to look forward to as she starts High School in the Fall and she claims she's both nervous and excited. This Spring she took Speech & Drama at Mt. Logan and loved it. Of the classes she'll have, she's mostly looking forward to the Theater class at LHS.

Becca tried out again for Infinity State Premier soccer Friday and Saturday and was invited to be on the team. She's pretty happy. Her coach sent us an email confirming her invitation and stated that not only was she on the roster, but was at the top of the list. She works very hard and impresses me with her dedication.

Owen continues to count down the days until school is out. I hope we'll be able to keep him occupied. He'll be attending a Sports Camp in June and seems excited for that. Day Camp with Cub Scouts is mixed in there too. He's been telling me he's not doing swimming lessons at all. However, today he said he'd do one session only. It's surprising to me, but lessons are getting more difficult and he worries about the tasks he has to complete. When he's not terrorizing his sisters, he's usually outside playing basketball perfecting his shot. It's pretty awesome.

Gracie just hangs in there with everyone's craziness. She continues to be really cute and manages to be the center of our attention when we're all gathered together. We're really happy she's part of our family.
